At Five Thirty in the morning, on July 31,2008. Bucki James through her leg over a horse in heaven. She has always been an early mornin' girl and always at the barn first thing. She is now happy and riding again with her Creator, Jesus Christ. No horses that she can't make into an awesome Cutter in that bunch either. Although we miss her, we are grateful that she is suffering no more, and will never have to "ride into the herd" of any storm like this again! We all have treasured this past time with her and hold her close to our hearts, as God holds Bucki close to His heart.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support!

Thank you to Gail Holmes for another amazing gift to Bucki. She has been the key individual behind getting two scholarship funds set-up in her honor. Please read below for all of the details!

The Bucki James Scholarships in Equine Orthopaedics and Equine Reproduction at Colorado State University

There will be 2 scholarships in memory of Catherine (Bucki) James who went to Heaven at 5:37 A.M. July 31, 2008 The scholarships will be in perpetuity and go towards the support veterinarians who have done advanced clinical training (residency) and are moving into a PhD program in orthopaedic or reproduction research.  There are still a large number of musculoskeletal and reproductive problems in the horse that have not been solved and a need to develop the next generation of top level researchers. There also are a number of desperate reproductive questions that must be answered too.  Because of the financial debt accrued by students in vet school, the attraction into private practice immediately after graduation is very strong and it is hard to recruit good people to return to research training and make a career in this critical area.  These graduate scholarships would support people with the passion and ability to do cutting edge research and would be used to both support salary as well as incrementally pay to assist them with paying off debt  from vet school and will based on good progress in the research training, as well as continued passion in the field.

The successful applicants would commit to 3 years of intensive research training for a PhD in a critical area of equine musculoskeletal or reproduction research.  And the same would apply as designated for the area of equine reproductive research.  The ultimate goal is to advance the diagnostics and therapeutics in equine orthopaedics and reproduction with a direct application to the equine industry, with benefit to human science as well. The further goal is to be able to choose the recipients of the scholarship based on their performance and hence to develop top talent in the country and world wide that will be able to contribute to solving of problems in both equine and human issues on a global level to benefit all.

The cost of endowing the above scholarship program will be $1,100,000 per scholarship.  The Bucki James Scholarships will kick off the inception of a scholarship program at the University with plans to grow to a total of 25 scholarships in all to help those with talent , passion and need that would otherwise not be able to pursue such. They will be chosen from all over the country.

Colorado State University is ranked # 1 in the United States in these two areas of equine discipline by numerous publications, but with decreasing governmental financial support there is serious need for increased support from the private sector. Know that this MEMORY of Bucki and contribution to a program she talked about and was enthusiastic about recently is a contribution going to a great cause that will memorialize BUCKI in many ways forever.

Donations to the Bucki James Scholarship Fund can be made to the Colorado State University Foundation with Bucki James Equine Orthopaedic Scholarship  or the Bucki James Reproductive Programs designated by donor of such contribution. A check can be  mailed to;

Home Post

The last couple of weeks, she has been on stall rest. Many of you wonder if she will ever return to the competitive arena. Bucki is still in the decision process and weighing all of her options. We are aware of her countless trophies with her horsemanship, but let us share with one another the trophies of her life and the lasting memories that will live on.

Thank you for visiting this site for Bucki. She would like to express her gratitude for all of the support and love that has been poured out by so many that love her. She is completely overwhelmed by the response of her friends and colleagues. This has given her great hope and we pray this space will only continue to offer encouragement in this trial. We would like this forum to be a place for all of those that Bucki has touched to express their love to her, her family will be monitoring this and giving her all of the messages. Because of her lack of strength this is what we are asking for at this time. It is very difficult for her to have visitors or talk on the phone. She is surrounded by her family and drawing closer to God every day.

Not the Best Patient 7/28

Although Bucki has been a wonderful patient, she did not teach Joey the same lessons. Last week when he was taken to the vet for his annual vaccinations it took 2 people to hold the little Jack Russell Terrier still. After wrestling with the crew for his shots, he came home with a sore leg and now is also on medicine. Maybe he just wanted to be a little closer to his mom and have some of the pampering and meds!

“Bucki’s Camp” Who is there? 7/30

We would like to share with you the some of the personalities that are represented at Bucki’s Camp. Pieces of a person’s character are often reflected in their choice of friends. I pray this blog will reveal yet another facet of how strong Bucki’s character is and how amazing those around have been.

Let’s Start with the Family….

Bucki's Mom, aka “Cupcake” to all is ever present and one that all have had the pleasure and honor of knowing. When they get to know her they realize that Bucki's strength of character and spirit came from her mom. As difficult as these days are for her, as no one should see their child pass before them, she delights in the opportunity to be with her. Gentle sweet kisses, holding her hand, laughter, tears, private conversations, and the soft stroke of her head provide the softness only a mother knows. Mom cannot sneak up on Bucky, even when she thinks she is asleep, Bucki can detect the darling shuffle of "Mumsy" as she enters the room! Mom is busted every time! She is the best runner with fresh water and cranberry juice.

Mary, Bucki’s next older sibling in from California, is available around the clock for her care or to just be with her. Keeping some family and friends updated daily that are not able to be here. She also is responsible for providing a famous cob salad almost every night with dinner, an attempt at offsetting the BlueBell for everyone.

Joanie, the next older sibling in the bunch a local from Oklahoma, has also made the ranch her home. Often on the early morning shift that starts at 1am she enjoys the chance to sit beside her sister anytime. Always busy keeping the rest of the family and friends updated daily, the duo of sisters provide much relief knowing the latest. Her husband, Bucki’s brother-in-law, Charlie has been on yard duty, in the Cherry picker pruning trees and keeping the ranch looking tip-top. Many times sleeping and snoring on the floor in the room when his wife is on morning rotation, Bucki is always asking, “Is he under my bed?”

On to the friends, that is basically family now…

Gail Holmes is faithful to massage feet and hands. She always offers the nutritious shakes now referred to as a “Gail Shake” that comes in many flavors. Gail also often sneaks electrolytes to her water or cranberry juice and is ever attentive to her care, a faithful and sweet friend. One who Bucki has been concerned with, "She is so nice, people take advantage of her." She did not say that sweet thing about some of the rest of Camp Bucki! So Gail or 'Uno' is the nice one in the group!

Gayle Karangus, or 'Dos' as she is referred to, has visited often and is a blessing whenever she comes. She brought the Ft Worth poster board with messages from fellow cutters that so lifted Bucki's spirits.

Joni Johnson, is a best friend who is here any time needed. She has helped take over the daily details of the ranch as horses and business must be tended to. Her angelic voice and soothing spirit minister to all. She has led great times of worship around Bucki's bedside. She is the great voice that leads a choir of joyful, yet pretty pathetic singers in those times of praise to the Lover of our souls, Jesus Christ. This so ministers to Bucki and brings refreshing to all of us. Her daughter Jessa is behind the scenes doing so much. She is the artist who sketched the horses for the web page and is working on various other projects for us. Her visits to Bucki, who had great spiritual impact and guidance on Jessa bless her as she is like a daughter to her. They have exchanged and shared a love for books and had countless deep conversations discussing something both had read.

Valerie Mulholland, or "Valvoline" as affectionately called by Bucki, is here from TX and helps round the clock. She brings humor with the feeling of  “I can't believe she just said that!” Bucki, not so fond of some of her PJ’s told her she looked like a 'marshmallow' one morning and a ‘leprechaun’ the next day! Valvoline is constantly sharing stories of the numerous pranks played. Val is the mediator, wise beyond her years (that says a lot since she is the oldest of the core group!) and brings all of us to the central focus of Jesus and ministering to Bucki through laughter and heart felt visiting.

Wendy Stuart, is the kind and calm sweet friend who is here whenever needed. She selflessly serves and is content just to be with family knowing that many wanted to see Bucki. She carries Joey to the vet, runs any errands and is one we all have grown to love deeply. Wendy is one that's life, by her own account, has radically been altered by knowing Bucki. Her husband, Philip, also part of Camp Bucki, is here to help or just be with us. He has said that he has a better wife due to her knowing Bucki.

Barb Boyer, keeps all of us loosened up as we go to her for Myotherapy as needed. She is often here on slumber party detail and brings such steadfast faith and joy in her presence. Her husband, Dean, is here when he is able.

Danny Miller, is the root of total entertainment and one who is here to do whatever is needed. Head of security at the hospital or home, fielding calls, and answering questions has taken great pressure off of all here. He is an amazing friend who all has grown to respect and love. He is ever conscious to check on Cupcake with sincerity and genuine concern. He has set his business and personal life aside to help or to just be with us.

Tom Holt, how sweet and caring. He has had an amazing impact in Bucki’s life. He has been in and out of the hospital and ranch with us all. They both talk about events and share great stories. He has been the connection at Ft. Worth, and we are so thankful for what he has made the show be to Bucki. Always checking in and seeing how everyone is. His presence is so relaxing and reassuring. We sure do miss him, but look forward to his return.

We will add more Biographies a little later, as many members of Camp have not yet been introduced…

Experiencing God's Love 7/27

Many laughs and also tears have been exchanged over the last couple of weeks. Bucki has been so amazing to encourage those around her throughout this time. During a recent conversation with Pastor John she explained something that has brought tears to many of our eyes. Bucki stated that a while ago she prayed and asked, “God let me experience Your love.” She was able to say with full confidence that this prayer has been answered. Describing that if she were to have died suddenly from another cause that she would never have known how loved she truly is. Your gifts and outpouring have been a part of God’s answer. Bucki is able to say that this journey has given her the greatest gift- the ability to know and experience God’s love!

Friendship 7/25

Who knew that A little nap could help uncover an expression of the heart? Jay Grubbs, aka Big Daddy, came to visit Bucki and she dozed off for a little while during his time with her. When Bucki woke up, he was just sitting there and she stated, “Aren’t you bored?” His kind response was uncomplicated, “No, not when I am with my friend Bucki!” This has been the heart soul we have seen behind each everyone’s response in this situation. It is all based on friendship. The around the clock care from family and friends, flowers, the meals provided, donations, emails, cards, expressions at the show. It is a testament to Bucki’s character and life for her to be surrounded with such amazing people, even when times are not fun.

Morning Rotation of the Pit Crew 7/24

They are not changing tires, but they do have tools. Each morning her Pit Crew gets to work…. Valerie Mulholland is in charge of handling all things hair. Bucki’s sister Mary helps to put some “Paint on the Barn” and handles everything Make-Up. Barb Bowers and Gail Holmes assist in massaging hands and feet. Bucki is still running the show, however when it comes to wardrobe. Do not get near her with a “hospital gown” She only wears what she chooses, and it is usually some shade of pink!

Stand on Your Head 7/24

Do not even begin to think that Bucki is not taking advantage of this situation! Why Danny Miller seems to be involved in several of these stories, is simply because he is a great friend. He offered to do “anything for Bucki”…. to which Bucki replied with, “Stand on your Head!” So Danny Miller stood on his head…not once but twice as Bea aka “Cupcake” (Bucki’s mother) requested to see this again, because she had missed the first show!

The Care 7/23

All of this time has gone by and finally a complaint, and guess who she complained to? Well if your answer was Danny Miller then you are right. She decided that she has, “Too many nurses and not enough Doctors!” She now refers to the group of women caring for her as, “The Pit Crew!” Although one thing she does love is her choice every evening to pick up to 2 people to have a Slumber Party with. Each night and each pairing of the Pit Crew offers unique conversations at odd hours. Everyone who has had this time with her in this way feel so blessed to lose sleep in order to have treasures forever.

Pink in Ft. Worth 7/23

Thank you, to everyone who is taking part in the effort to support Bucki. Wednesday at Ft. Worth was deemed Cancer Awareness Day, in honor of Bucki. As many are wearing pink, this might help answer some of your questions. Why pink? Why is it everywhere? Well all we can tell you is that when asked about the color pink Bucki said, “A man looks HOT in pink.” Yes it is just that simple.

Food+Food+Food= Tight Pants 7/22

Well it is almost like an auction around here sometimes, the family bartered some of Grandma’s Clam Chowder for a second of Joyce’s (the Pastor’s wife) Chocolate Fudge Cake. Although it may not be any problem for Bucki her friends and family are “Easy Keepers”…. as they are getting a little plump. Joni Johnson summed it up well, “I look like a 4H project!” They have decided they either will need to hire a personal trainer or get a second job to buy a larger wardrobe… stay tuned for more of the untold consequences of having good cooks and excellent bakers around!!!

A Beautiful Time of Worship 7/22

Bucki and her family were not blessed with the best of singing voices, however they do not shy away from praising the Lord. Joni Johnson with a wonderful voice led the rest of the croaking frogs in a beautiful time of worship singing the old hymns and praising God. Bucki was so beautiful as she worshipped her creator, much like she has done her whole life on the back of a horse!

No More Hi-Lo 7/22

When Bucki's sister, Joanie, won up to $10k in there personal betting ring not involving actual money.... Bucki told Gail Holmes, "You have to watch her. She acts like she doesn't understand cutting and she is dumb like a fox!" Needless to say Bucki is happy to play with the others, but has eliminated some of the competition. She continues to keep us laughing and we have decided that 40 something years of one-liners and smart A** responses have surfaced this past week. She is a riot!

Unique & Special Gifts 7/21

During this time Bucki has received some very special gifts. Including poems, special artwork drawn just for her, sneaking animals into all kinds of places, food runs to anywhere at any time, special creams, ice cream, times of worship, and everything in between.... the latest gift came from Bucki's oldest sister Peg, she cut 12 inches of her hair off and donated in Bucki's name to Locks of Love. This was a gift of love that is precious. Much to their mom's happiness after pleading with Peg for years to cut her hair, Peg decided this was gift that she could bless her sister with and it did! Bucki's spirits are great and encouraged daily.

What time is it anyway? 7/17

This is a time of sweet laughter and precious moments that we will treasure forever. Clocks have no value as night and day are so similar as we are ready to enjoy conversation with her whatever the hour. At 3 am, Wendy Stewart (A neighbor and Joey's original mom) stumbled to her side, blanket across shoulders, limping after tripping over Joey in the dark. Bucki greeted her with "Geez Wendy, you look like a troll!"

"Cowboy-Up" Bucki Style 7/17

One thing we do know is that this tough "Ride to the Herd" has created a new term amongst her friends and family. During this battle with cancer, Bucki's response has been gracious and humorous as we subject her to medications and moving her or working on her--all by non-pros in her circle of family and friends. We have coined a term, from the original "Cowboy Up", for her tough, yet gracious response to all of us and this situation--"Bucki Up!" It not only means to step up to the challenge but to do it with grace, humor, courage and even and sense of gratitude.

Driving or Not 7/16

Well anyone who knows Bucki, probably knows that she loves practical jokes. It has been fun reading some of the emails and hearing more stories then we even knew about....Well her good friend and neighbor Val, an interior designer, decided that even though Bucki may not be driving she still needed a little "bed decor". Getting back at her friend, Val posted a license plate at the top of her bed reading, "I don't have a headache, I give em!" This is not the first appearance of this sign.... Bucki placed this on Val's car a few years back, who did not realize it until she was pulled over by the police for "covering her license plate" .... so although Bucki may not be driving anywhere, she is still as fun as ever!

BlueBell oh BlueBell 7/15

What is it about ice cream that makes almost any one feel a little bit better? I am not sure, but Bucki's 3 am cravings all revolve around a special basic Vanilla and Chocolate mix that her niece gave her a while back when she was in the hospital. Somehow this always hits the spot 3am, 7am, 2pm, 9pm... yes this now daily pattern although the exact time may fluctuate it always ends with a sweet and sugar filled smile!

Give Me Your Best Guess 7/15

Well Bucki might not be in Ft. Worth, but she is watching it. All day we have the laptop on so she and the family can watch along with her at the ranch. She has been having fun, having her non-cutting family guess Hi-Low based on her score..... she is always the winner surprise, surprise! It has been hard for her not be there, but is rooting for her friends and loves being a part of the show even in spirit.

A Recap of Her Week at the Ranch 7/11

What a week. We have literally received hundreds of emails. Bucki has so appreciated the support. Your encouragement has not only blessed Bucki, but also her family. Bucki has two of her sisters and mom with her around the clock. As well as a couple of close friends and neighbors, Joni, Val, and Wendy. Gail Holmes and Gayle Karanges have been great additions, in and out over the last couple of weeks. Danny Miller and Tom Holt have provided great "security" and have been a true blessing.

Bucki is comfortable, and such a sport! She never complains, well almost never.... We did have to call Security aka Danny in to help with a medicine that she was not in the mood for. He did as any good friend would do, listened compassionately and then responded with, "Shut up and drink the shit!" We have all learned that medicine is always taken better after a good laugh!

We were blessed to have a time of worship and communion at the house with Bucki's Pastor and wife (John and Joyce). The smile on her face and peace of His Presence made us aware that there is no fear for her future. Her passion for horses is exceeded only by her passion for the Creator of those horses and all else. She has lived a life in love with Him and one that honors her Lord, Jesus.

She is a bit weaker but free from pain and soaking the love of all, via cards, gifts sent to Horsemen for Christ, emails and food brought to the family. Your prayers mean more to us than anything else and we sincerely appreciate all.

What a Party 7/6

What are friends for? Well, Gail Holmes is at it again, no she is not hiding in a shower this time, but still making every effort to bring Bucki a smile. She brought Wilbur, one of Bucki's favorite geldings, up to the window yesterday afternoon so she could pet his face. Bucki could not have had more fun. Today has been great, being home is the best!

Home Sweet Home 7/5

Bucki has transferred back to her home. Her response when asked how the ride went was, "Man, that was fun." She is all smiles with Joey right next to her. The transfer was great, and she was a trooper. Another brother and two more nieces arrived today from California. The "Camp" is in full swing, and the grill will be going tonight.

4th of July 7/4

Fireworks or not, we are not missing any BBQ's, her brother-in-law, Charlie, brought home-cooked hamburgers with all of the fixings to "Bucki's Camp" at the hospital. The nurses have been great, as we have overtaken the corner of the floor and made ourselves very comfortable. No chair goes unclaimed if it makes it into the hall. Bucki had a terrific night, resting and enjoying the day. We have all laughed at some of the great memories you have been sharing. Thank you from all of us at the "Camp".

Family 7/3

Bucki has been blessed to have another sibling, her Brother Bob and family arrive today from California and Texas. She has had a restful afternoon, and is enjoying her family. She is enjoying the emails and appreciates all of the prayers and support.

A Dog Story 7/3

Bucki had a special visitor yesterday afternoon. Her favorite little four legged pal, Joey. Her little Jack Russel Terrier, was brought in by some friends in a Gucci bag. We were caught by the Doctors, even though Gail tried to hide him in the shower at one point. The eventful afternoon brought big smiles to Bucki.

Wednesday 7/2

Bucki has had two great days. She is still visiting with the Doctors and going over all of her options. She is surrounded by her closest friends and family. Thank you for your continued prayers.
